It features long lyrate leaves and clusters of purple florets. The leaves are auricled at the base with jagged, toothed patterns along the sides, averaging 1.6–4.1 ft. (0.50–1.25 m) in length.
Qist Al Hindi, Costus, or Saussurea costus is an herbal plant indigenous to the high valleys of Kashmir and the Himalayas. It is known by various names in different languages, including "kuṣṭha" in Sanskrit, "kust" or "qust" in Arabic and Persian.
The stout roots of the plant can extend up to 16 in. (40 cm) in length. Costus root is characterized by its bitter aroma and yellow or light brown color. There are two main types of Costus roots, both available in dried form, each offering remarkable healing benefits:
- "Qist al-Bahri," lighter in color and milder in flavor.
- "Qist al-Hindi," darker in color with a stronger flavor.
